Changing a Room With the Seasons Without Buying More Things
Four seasonal swaps that use what a rustic home already has — textiles, light, greenery and what you leave out on the surfaces.
Seasonal decorating is usually sold as four sets of objects stored in four boxes. There is a cheaper version that reads better: change the textiles, the light and what is on the surfaces, and leave the objects out of it.
Textiles do most of the work
Heavy wool and layered throws in cold months; a single lighter cover and bare wood or stone in warm ones. Same room, same furniture, entirely different temperature to the eye.
Light second
- Winter: two or three low, warm lamps instead of one ceiling light. Candles on the table rather than the shelf.
- Summer: clear the sills, wash the glass, let the room run on daylight and switch nothing on until dusk.
Greenery, cut short
One jug of whatever is actually growing nearby beats an arrangement. Bare branches in February, herbs in June, seed heads in October. It costs nothing and it dates the room to the week rather than the season.
Then take one thing away
Every seasonal change is a good moment to remove one object without replacing it. Do it four times a year and a room stays legible for as long as you live in it.

The Rustic Collection is our own small run of wool, oak, waxed canvas and stoneware — the same materials this article talks about. We are paid when you buy from it.
