One Room, One Weekend: A Plain Reset Plan

A two-day order of work for resetting a room without stripping it back or spending much — empty, clean, repair, return, then stop.

You do not need a renovation to change how a room feels. You need an order of work, so the effort lands where it shows. This is the order we use.

Saturday morning: empty and sort

Take out everything that is not furniture. Sort it into four piles on the landing or the hall: keep, repair, move to another room, and out. Do not clean, do not decide about furniture yet, and do not start on a second room.

Saturday afternoon: clean the surfaces you never clean

  • Skirting, door tops, light fittings and the wall behind the door.
  • Windows, inside and the reachable outside — this changes the light more than paint does.
  • Under and behind the largest piece of furniture.

Sunday morning: the repair pile

Work through repairs before anything goes back in. Tighten the chair, oil the board, wax the canvas, glue the handle. An hour here usually saves a purchase.

Sunday afternoon: return less than you removed

Put back the furniture, then the useful things, then — last — the decoration, and stop while the room still feels open. Whatever is left over waits a week in a box. Most of it never asks to come back.
