Find Your Direction

The first Compass Letter: why this exists, what you can expect each month, and one small thing to do this week.

Welcome to The Compass Letter.

I started The Rustic Compass because most advice about money, work and home life is written for somebody else — somebody with more room to fail, more cash to spare, more hours in the day. This letter is written for the rest of us: one honest note a month, no hype, no filler.

What you can expect

  • One letter a month, sent on a Tuesday morning.
  • A short piece on money, business or home life, in plain language.
  • One free resource each month you can print and use the same day.
  • Nothing sold to you that I have not used myself.

Where to start

If you are new here, the Start Here page will point you to the right corner of the site in about two minutes. From there, the Money Compass is where most people begin — it deals with the ordinary problems first: what is coming in, what is going out, and what one change would make the biggest difference this month.

You do not need a five-year plan. You need the next right step, taken this week.

Your one small thing this week

Write down every fixed cost you pay each month, in one column, on one page. Not a budget — just the list. Most people find at least one line they had forgotten. That single page is the beginning of a direction.

Thank you for being one of the first on this list. If you ever want to come off it, reply to this note and you are off, no hard feelings.
